Rebekah was a disciplined woman. She maintained routine. When it was time to fetch water, she fetched water.
I have read Genesis chapter 24, times without number and up until recently, I never really found anything that made me stop and take a second look. What made me stop and take a second look at Genesis chapter 24? The discovery of Rebekah! As I go through this journey of discovery one more time, I invite you to join me verse by verse.
We both know how Rebekah got to be in the Bible. Abraham was looking for a wife for Isaac, so he sent his favourite servant on a mission of girl spotting. The servant was beginning to voice his fears of mission impossible, when Abraham told him that all would be well for him if he did not come back with a wife for Isaac.
Where do we first meet Rebekah? In Genesis chapter 24 verse 15. Rebekah appears at the well before the servant had completed his prayer of help. There is something notable about Rebekah’s appearance in this verse. Let us find out what it is in verse 13.
“Behold, here I stand by the well, and the daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water.”
Rebekah is found among the women who have come out to draw water. Water, for me, may represent spiritual water, soul water or physical water, which I personally categorize into three types of work that a woman must constantly engage in:
Spiritual Work – the primary source of this is the Bible. Having become born again just a few years ago, I have admitted to the fact that when I neglect my spiritual life, I neglect my whole life. I am yet to succeed at reading my Bible as much as I would like to, but God has helped me to succeed in trusting Him against backsliding.
Read the Bible, as God’s love letter to you. Savour the taste of each verse. Leave your heart open and let The Holy Spirit lead you on a journey of discovery of Jesus’ love for you.
As Christian women, we need to experience God so deep that He becomes more real than the chairs we sit on. The most important thing to a daughter of God is gaining an understanding that God actually cares. It has taken me almost three years to realize that God is concerned about my welfare twenty-four hours a day. He is concerned about even the most mundane issues of my life. Why? Because I am His precious baby.
If I am bored, He knows. If I feel like blowing a storm, He knows. When I blink, He knows.
No matter how intimate your emotions and thoughts are, God is fully aware of them and this gives you the greatest advantage any princess can have on this earth. If only you will bare yourself before Him. Chat with God. Sit down and tell Him exactly how you feel. Give God a spiritual hug. Leave out all the usual ceremonies and God will be so present around you that you will know for a fact who you are – a daughter of the Great King, a princess.
Soul Work – Your mind is a vacuum, it needs to be fed. How many times have we heard that? Feed your mind with imaginations of great things. Being well informed helps you to dream with more details because you will be more aware of the problems, which have already been solved.
Expand your horizon. Read books on your goals, read biographies, read about people that live in strange far away lands. Find out what is out there. You have never been to Zone X before? Then go to Zone X, check it out, find out who and what is there. There is no crime in exploring your world. As a student, I would sometimes pick up my luggage and head to an unknown place just to know what else is in this big beautiful world that God created for me. You may not be privileged at the moment to head to Scotland or cross the Alps, but I believe that in future, God will give you the privilege of seeing His wonderful works of creativity.
There are things that you can never understand or imagine until you have been exposed to a completely different life from what you are used to. Watch television documentaries, read an Atlas. There are places I used to read about in my atlas and dream of visiting, today I have visited a lot of those places and I know that my journeys around the world have just begun. You must dream it before you can have it.
Avoid feeding your mind on anything that will not add something positive to your life.
Spending so much time on watching telenovelas will make you suspicious, narrow minded and petty. Whatever lessons are learnt from these stories are not enough to propel you into your future. People that spend their lives watching such videos live substandard lives. They believe that all men are the same, they do not believe in true friendships, they talk and act as if they are the center of attention for all mishaps.
You have a right to dream and being well informed helps you to dream well. The bigger your dream, the bigger your future.
God said to Abraham...
“Lift your eyes now and look from the place where you are – northward, southward, eastward and westward; for all the land which you see I give to you and your descendants forever.”
Genesis 13 verse 14, 15
The first step to building dreams is to discover the purpose of those dreams. A dream without a purpose is a fantasy.
Physical Work – Eat well and work well. Rebekah was at the well because she never neglected her daily duties. Speaking in tongues will not dust the house. Do not neglect your daily chores. Contribute your quota to your household. The more you engage in these daily chores, the more your hands will become used to doing them and eventually it will not even feel as if you are doing any work. Be the best employee to your employer. Having perfect nails will not make up for having an imperfect attitude towards bending down to work.
REBEKAH WAS A DISCIPLINED WOMAN. SHE EVEN MAINTAINED ROUTINE. WHEN IT WAS TIME TO FETCH WATER, SHE FETCHED WATER.
