I can trace some of the life-changing events of my life to some stranger whom I met. It even appears that I have had more of such occurrences from complete strangers rather than from old pals or family members.
I have landed a few high profile jobs through first-time acquaintances, shared a taxi with a stranger who turned out to be the juniour brother of our President, and started companies with complete strangers whom I met through an acquaintance.
Being able to form strategic alliances and finding key connectors can save you years of going around in circles or help you to break out of your current level of success. Someone somewhere has something for you.
I got married the first month I made up my mind to start having a social life. Prior to that my life had consisted of my banking career, occasional church attendance, and my television set. I got the banking job when I attended a client's birthday party. I had gotten my little nest of an apartment through an introduction that my boss made between I and the landlady. So how did I get stuck in the house-work-church routine?
I had gotten to a place where I was consistently overwhelmed by work and I felt like the only other thing I could do with my life at the time was to flop in front of the television and binge watch several episodes of Desperate Housewives, Alias, Prison Break, or 24. Next came Ugly Betty and eventually Suits. Predictable.
The purpose of my writing this book, Networking Success, is to share with you the various circumstances that led to my having some of the contacts that greatly benefited my life and career over the years, and share some tips based on what I have learnt so far about meeting people in various situations.
Hopefully, the book will inspire you to go out and intentionally meet more people, be strategic about your networking activities, plan them, and at the same time raise funds for me to continue my radio broadcast on essential etiquette skills for everyone who cares to listen.
I was reading articles on the importance of etiquette and good manners when I came across this statement, "Without proper manners and etiquette, the customs of polite society would soon disappear and we would act more like animals and less like people."
I believe this sums up one of the reasons why I keep promoting books, events, and media programs on the subject of etiquette.
I had often thought of my Etiquette and Influencing skills classes as courses just for persons in professional settings, the diplomatic community, or leadership positions. When I realized how necessary it was for the average person to understand the basics of common courtesy, I decided to find ways to make etiquette skills more accessible to more people.
The First Class book series is part of this goal. Business Lunch is the first in the series is to make etiquette skills available to more people so that they can understand how to employ common courtesies and present themselves at their personal and professional best.
Secondly; it is to raise funds for a radio program and podcast series on essential etiquette skills and a dining etiquette video production that will be promoted on social media.
